YouTube is finally rolling out the Picture-in-Picture mode for iPhones and iPads. This feature allows the users to watch videos on YouTube while using other apps on their mobile devices.

Users need not have to install the YouTube app on their iPhone or iPad to get the picture-in-picture mode. Instead, you can experience it directly using a Web browser, including the preloaded Safari.

This feature is being rolled out only to YouTube Premium users in the US. This means that YouTube users outside the United States cannot access the PiP mode on their iPhones and iPads yet.

“Picture-in-Picture (PiP) allows users to watch YouTube videos in a small mini player while simultaneously browsing outside of the YouTube app on their mobile device. We’re starting to roll out PiP for YouTube Premium members on iOS and plan to launch PiP for all US iOS users as well,” as a report by MacRumors.

Steps to run YouTube videos in picture-in-picture mode on iOS

Open your Web browser and log in to YouTube with your account that is a part of the YouTube Premium subscription.

Search for a video that you want and tap the square icon from the bottom right of the video for full-screen mode.

Tap on the video to view controls and then press the picture-in-picture button from the top left side

Once enabled, picture-in-picture mode lets you move to and work on any other app you want to - while continuously playing a running YouTube video in a small window.

If you have received the PiP mode on YouTube, you can activate it by playing a video on the app and then swiping to go home. The video should continue playing in a small window, which you will notice at the bottom of the screen.

Some iPad users can still use the picture-in-picture while using YouTube on the Safari browser. In most cases, this feature was only introduced to premium subscribers.

YouTube hasn’t said anything about the global rollout yet. It is expected to be followed by a global rollout, perhaps in the coming months.
